French

Welcome to the French section of our school website!

At Avenue Primary School, we want to promote a love of learning languages, understanding of the world and developing strong, life-long linguistic skills. We believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective of the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

We teach French throughout Reception, KS1 and KS2. Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s skills in languages, through regular taught lessons.

Children are actively encouraged to role-play real life scenarios in French, including restaurant visits, shop visits, doctor visits and many others. We have a strong connection to international schools including France, Belgium and Canada (Quebec) and exchange letters and greetings through our pen pal project.

We regularly learn and perform international songs within our assemblies.
We often celebrate cultural diversity through a series of exciting and fun international days.

We intend to enable all children to:

  • Develop an enthusiastic and positive attitude to other languages and language learning.
  • Foster positive attitudes towards foreign language learning.
  • Develop curiosity about language.
  • Develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries.
  • Develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
  • Have a sufficient foundation for future language learning.

In addition, we would like to encourage you to have a look over the french curriculum map to get an idea of how the children progress as they move through the school
