Mental Health and Wellbeing for your Family

Wellbeing is our ability to be happy, comfortable and healthy.  It is having the knowledge to adapt and make adjustments to maintain a positive mental health.  In order to have a positive mental health it is vital to strike a balance in life.

What if my child needs support?

It is normal to feel upset or angry sometimes.  These feelings are usually balanced with happiness and joy. If the sad or angry thoughts are becoming difficult to control there are lots of things you can do to help.  We can sometimes feel like we are not coping when our routine is disrupted, when we are ill or things seem out of our control.

In school we encourage:

  • Mindfulness and breathing techniques
  • Daily exercise
  • A clear, but flexible routine
  • Talking about how you feel

While at home you can also access the following useful support services:

The Wheel of Wellbeing

The Wheel of Wellbeing is a great way to try and seek a balanced life.  Try and see all areas as interdependent.  If one section is missing the wheel is weakened.  Try and maintain your balance and notice when you or members of your family may need support to re-balance.

Healthy Living

What is Change4Life?

These days, ’modern life’ can mean that we’re a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, we don’t move about as much, or eat as well as we used to.

Change4Life for your kids

Nine out of 10 of our kids today could grow up with dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies. This can cause life-threatening diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Change4Life for you

By the time we reach middle age, the majority of us could do with losing at least a bit of weight. Being overweight isn’t just about the way we look. It can lead to more aches and pains, problems sleeping and people report a loss of energy and confidence. It also increases our chances of getting heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. Middle age comes to everyone – ‘middle aged spread’ doesn’t have to.
You’ve taken the first step towards getting yourself or your kids eating well, moving more and living longer just by being here - so welcome to Change4Life!

The Change4life website has lot of information on how to keep your child healthy. Also, it shows you how to download the different free apps for your phone or tablet.

Avenue Primary School is working hard to embed these in to everyday life at school and parents/carers should be doing the same at home. The Change4life resources are excellent tools to help you do this.
